ESR4 - Testing based parameterization of contact and friction

Recruiting Institution/Company: Imperial College (United Kingdom)

PhD awarded by: Imperial College (United Kingdom)

Objectives: The project focuses on identification of suitable parameters for contact and friction to be used in modelling. Recently developed and currently used test rigs will be adapted and used to extract relevant data to model the friction interface, and to identify appropriate parameters to put into nonlinear dynamic tools.

Expected Results: The project addresses (i) rating and measurement of parameters for contacts (tangential and normal contact stiffness, friction models, normal load, microslip, wear, localised temperature), (ii) their effect on nonlinear dynamic response predictions.

Planned secondment(s):
Rolls-Royce: collection of available data, analysis of best practice approaches available in the company. The project will also be done in close collaboration with UOXF (see also ESR4 Table).
POLITO: experimental tests for Round-Robin with Imperial results.
